1) Three killed in attack on Papua police station

TIMIKA, Indonesia, Nov 27, 2012 (AFP) - Separatist gunmen attacked a police station Tuesday in Indonesia's restive Papua province, killing three officers and setting the complex alight, police said.
Around 50 gunmen, said by police to be members of the separatist Free Papua Movement, attacked the Pirime police station in the town of Wamena, provincial police spokesman I Gde Sumarta told AFP.
"There was an attack on Tuesday on Pirime police station, which resulted in the death of three police officers," he said via text message, adding that investigations are ongoing.
"A shootout broke out between police and the gunmen, who have since fled to the mountains," he said.
The Pirime police chief and another officer were found dead in their barracks, while a third was killed as he prepared to raise the Indonesian flag, Sumatra said.
The police station was set alight and the officers' bodies were charred.
Gun attacks are not uncommon in resource-rich Papua, where poorly-armed separatist groups have for decades fought a low-level insurgency on behalf of the mostly ethnic Melanesian population.

An early morning attack on a police post in Lanny Jaya district in Papua on Tuesday reportedly left two policemen dead and another missing.

According to Antaranews.com, an unknown number of assailants attacked the Pirime Police office at around 5 a.m.

The police chief, First. Insp. Tangkupdsi, and a police officer, Second Brig. Jefry Rumkorem, were shot dead. The whereabouts of a third police officer, identified as Daniel Makuker, are unknown.

Papua Police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. I Gede Sumerta Jaya said details were still limited.

“I haven't received confirmation and complete data from there [Pirime Police office]," Sumerta said.

The incident happened a day after another policeman, a member of Unurumguay Police, Brig. Gotlif, was attacked while he was with his family in a car.

According to Vivanews.com, two perpetrators on a motorcycle intercepted the car. Gotlif emerged from the car and was hit in the head with a gun. He fell down and one of the perpetrators shot his right leg and shot the car.

Gede said that the motive behind the shooting was not yet clear.

Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA News) - The Pirime police headquarter was attacked early on Tuesday by an unknown armed group leaving two police officers dead and one missing.

Information gathered by ANTARA news agency said one of the dead officers was the district police chief identified as T and the other one was identified as JR.

The one missing after the attack at 5.00 local time is DM.

Papua police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr I Gede Sumerta Jaya could not confirmed the report saying he had not received complete data about the incident.

"I have yet to receive full report from there," I Gede Sumerta said.

Papua has remained a hot spot with rebels attacking from time to time .

Shooting incidents involving unknown attackers have been frequent in Papua.

Earlier this month chief of the Papua police Ins.Gen. Tito Karnavian said in the last four years, there have been many shooting incidents in the mining area of Freeport Indonesia, which has large gold and copper mines in Papua, but most of the cases remained a mystery .

Hundreds of acts of terror by unknown armed groups left more than 20 people killed including Freeport workers, police officers, company`s security officers and local traditional gold prospectors, Tito said.

He said currently security is favorable and under control in the provinces of Papua and West Papua

Investigations of a number of recent cases like terror bomb in Wamena have been wrapped up with the perpetrators arrested, he said.

Police have also arrested six suspects linked to the illegal explosives planted at Timika, he said.(*)
