1) MERAUKE WILL BE A RICE SUPPLIER

Merauke, Jubi (25/2)- Merauke Regent,  Romanus Mbaraka said the regency is suitable for agricultural development and will be the ‘rice barn” of Papua and eastern parts of Indonesia.
He said on Tuesday (2/25) that the State Logistic Agency ( Bulog) has provided the supply of rice to various regencies of Southern region of Papua up to Timika, Sorong, Fak-Fak and some other areas of Papua such as Maluku.
The annual average rice production reaches 39 thousand tons.
“Of course, there are various development strategies implemented by government , one of which is agricultural expansion, by opening of agricultural land. So rice production will be increasing from year to year,” he said.
The regent also said that Merauke also recorded infrastructure improvements such as irrigation networks in order to motivate farmers to improve their farming methods.
Separately, Head of Agriculture and Foodstuffs of Merauke, Ir. Bambang Dwiatmoko, said the area offers opportunities for development, including rice growing.
“We do not only focus on the transmigration areas but also will reach out the villages inhabited by the indigenous people of Papua, “he said.
In 2013, the government opened the land for rice farming at Sabon village, Waan district and Suam  Satu and Suam Dua villages, Tabonji district. The results were very encouraging and promising with the rice crop flourishing.
“As a result, local villagers are continuously encouraged to cultivate agricultural land well. The Department of Agriculture and Foodstuff of Merauke is committed to assisting local farmers ” he said. (Jubi / Frans L Kobun/ Tina)

2) FOUR SIRIWO RESIDENTS LIVE WITH HIV/AIDS

Jayapura, 24/2 (Jubi) – Test results for 80 Siriwo residents have revealed that four cases of them are infected with HIV- AIDS.
“It is worrying to find out that even in an isolated area like  Siriwo region, HIV – AIDS exists. It is a bad sign, although all residents have not conducted a medical check – up ” said Hanok Herison, director of Community Welfare Development Foundation (YAPKEMA) in Paniai on Monday afternoon (2/24).
The government must come up with a strategic plan to fight the spread of HIV- AIDS and discrimination and stigma on the patients, Hanok wrote to Tabloidjubi.com.
“We have to prevent the epidemic. The degradation of a number of small clans that exist in remote area such as Siriwo, Sukikai, Dumadama, Bogobaida, and Menou is real. We cannot let the epidemic grow,” he stressed
YAPKEMA reported based on its findings that the growing epidemic is hard to avoid because communities lack of basic knowledge about the danger of HIV- AIDS. The dissemination of information about this deadly virus is very low.
He added that people will be more cautious if they have enough knowledge on HIV/ AIDS but people who live in remote areas are extremely vulnerable to the disease.
Although, the Paniai AIDS Prevention Commission (KPAD) has not released the findings of HIV cases in the District Siriwo, the Health department  of Pania regency will continue to administer tests for HIV- AIDS in that area this year, said Robby Kayame, the head of the Paniai Health department. The tests started in August.
“There are several programs that will be implemented in 2014. One of them is mass examinations and free of medical treatment in the villages, “said Kayame.
The population of Siriwo district is more than 8,000 people, living in three villages -  Menau, Kotu, and Dadau.
The villages are hard to reach because they are located on the flanks of the mountains. If villagers want to go Dogiyai, Paniai or Nabire, they must walk via Trans Papua road , Nabire – Paniai for days. There is also a bridge made of rattan measuring approximately 40 meters. After arriving at KM 145 or KM 131, then they can wait for a car to take them to Dogiyai, Paniai or Nabire. (Jubi / Mark You/ Tina)

3) Papua governor installs  Mimika regency ’caretaker’
Nethy Dharma Somba, The Jakarta Post, Jayapura | Archipelago | Wed, February 26 2014, 9:05 PM
Papua Governor Lukas Enembe has installed Ausilius You as caretaker of Mimika regency in order to fulfill the requirement to be able to propose additional funding to the Mimika Regional Legislative Council (DPRD). The additional funds are for organizing the second round of the Mimika regency elections.
The installation was held at a hotel in Jayapura on Wednesday, a day after the administration announced a delay to the election for Mimika regent due to a lack of funds.
“By installing the caretaker, we expect to be able to organize the election soon,” Lukas said on Wednesday.
Previously the Mimika DPRD had rejected the request for additional funds proposed by Ausilius, in his capacity as acting regent. The lawmakers said the request could only be made by a caretaker and not an acting regent.
Commenting on this, Ausilius promised that he would soon discuss the additional funding with the lawmakers.  He hoped that the election would be held no later than the slated legislative elections on April 9.
Currently two tickets, Abdul Muis-Hans Magal and Eltinus Omaleng-Yohanis Bassang are running in the election for the Mimika regent.(atw/dic)
