1) Indonesia, Fiji discuss development cooperation in Pacific region

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno L.P. Marsudi held a bilateral meeting with her Fijian counterpart, Josaia Vorueqe Bainimarama, to discuss development cooperation in the Pacific region.
"Indonesia and Fiji will strengthen and encourage the development cooperation in the region," Retno Marsudi said, in a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received here on Wednesday.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, United States on September 19, 2016.
During the discussion, Foreign Minister Retno said that Indonesia and Fiji had similar concerns about establishing peace and a conducive situation in the Pacific region.
Both countries also had agreed to develop cooperation in their economies, development and trade.
"We have to encourage the interaction of business people to strengthen economic relations in both countries and regions. Fiji is the largest trade partner for Indonesia in the Pacific region," the minister noted.
Furthermore, the Foreign Minister has lobbied Fiji to support Indonesia to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2019 to 2020 period.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister of Fiji Bainimarama said that Indonesias assistance, particularly in the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Queen Victoria School (QVS), had helped in rebuilding education in Fiji.
In March, Cyclone Winston, a powerful storm, struck Fiji. The tropical cyclone destroyed schools, houses, churches, roads and crops.
Indonesia and Fiji created a cooperation program called Disaster Risk Management.
The foreign minister also reiterated the position of Fiji to respect the territorial integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.
At the end of the discussion, the Indonesian Foreign Minister invited all members of The Melanesian Spearhead Group Foreign Ministers to attend the Bali Democracy Forum in December 2016.

2) Indonesian Backing Sought For Council

Fiji has asked Indonesia to support its candidacy for membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama made the request in his bilateral meeting with the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi in the Margins of the 71st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
This was one of Mr Bainimarama’s first official engagements as Minister for Foreign Affairs. He replaces Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, who is now Minister for Immigration, National Security and Defence.
Mr Bainimarama said: “We would very much appreciate Indonesia’s support towards our candidacy in the 2017 election.
“In our 2013 Constitution, and throughout my Government’s activities, the protection of human rights remains our utmost priority, and we hope to bring that commitment to the Human Rights Council should our bid be successful.”
He acknowledged Indonesia’s support towards Fiji’s proposal for observer status in ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations).
“While the moratorium on observer applications remains in effect, we look forward to pushing our submission again at the appropriate time,” he said.
He expressed his gratitude to international partners for coming forward to help Fiji rebuild after Cyclone Winston.
“We were lucky that many of our international partners – Indonesia included – came to our aid to help get our people back on their feet. And I would like to especially thank the Indonesian Government for assisting with the reconstruction of Queen Victoria School.”
Mr Bainimarama said one way to revitalise our agriculture sector was vegetable seedlings, grains and fertiliser for farms and fish feed and fish strains for fisheries.
“We hope to explore opportunities for cooperation with the Indonesian Government in these areas, so that we can rebuild back better than before and keep sustainable our record economic growth,” Mr Bainimarama said.
“Our nations already have a lengthy history of cooperation that covers a broad range of development areas, including fisheries, small and medium enterprises, public works and infrastructure, diplomat training, women empowerment and child protection, youth and sports, elections, disaster management and visa exemption for diplomats.
“These joint projects have been enormously beneficial to the Fijians they have impacted, and we are keen to carry out similar work alongside Indonesia in other areas and deepen our existing cooperation. For example, now that we have signed the Visa Exemption Agreement for short-term stay visas for our Diplomatic and Service Passport holders, we would also like to request the same exemption be extended to our ordinary passport holders.
“We also see many new opportunities for economic cooperation.
“Our Fijian-made brand is expanding in popularity as a brand increasingly associated with quality natural resource products, and we hope to attract niche markets for Pure Fiji, Virgin Coconut Oil and others in Indonesia.”

The appointment of the defense program recruits was made official by attaching pins on them.
“State defense awareness is very important as a state force for the sake of keeping the Republic of Indonesia intact as well as protecting the nation from threats, be they from outside or inside the country,” said Ryamizard.
He added that global development was increasing at a rapid and uncontrolled pace, so the young generation must be equipped with the values of nationalism and statehood.
The border area in eastern Indonesia was chosen because Jayapura is an entrance to Indonesia from the east. The government is seeking to infuse the region’s young generation with a sense of nationalism to meet challenges from the outside world.
Skouw Mabo village leader Yans S. Mallo welcomed the appointment of the state defense program recruits, saying that it showed the government was paying attention to the region.
During the occasion, Ryamizard was also declared a native son, marked by Mallo placing a traditional Papuan hat on his head and Papua New Guinea’s Wutung village leader Stenly Tanva placing a token traditional bag around his neck

4) UN opens new office space in Honiara
The new United Nations Joint Presence Office (UN JPO) space has been officially launched in the Solomon Islands capital Honiara this morning on Wednesday 21 September.
The Acting Prime Minister of Solomon Islands, Honourable Manasseh Maelanga was the chief guest to officially open the UN JPO, located at the ANZ Building in Ranadi, together with Osnat Lubrani, UN Resident Coordinator responsible for the Pacific nations including Solomon Islands.
In addition to marking the opening of the new JPO, Lubrani has been in the country to participate in the national consultation on the new UN Pacific Strategy 2018-2022. She has been accompanied by other UN Heads of Agencies: Sheldon Yett, the UNICEF Representative to the Pacific countries; Bruce Campbell, Director for UNFPA Pacific Sub-Regional Office and UNFPA Representative in the Pacific; Bakhodir Burkhanov, the UNDP Pacific Country Director; Aleta Miller, UN Women Representative; Sune Gudnitz, Head of OCHA in the Pacific and Eriko Hibi, FAO Representative.
The new UN JPO is comprised of the four agencies: the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), UNWomen (UNWOMEN), and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). In addition, the JPO houses other members of the UN family including United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The JPO in Solomon Islands is managed and led by UNDP.
At the ceremony, the UN Resident Coordinator Osnat Lubrani said,“those of us who work for the UN, who will be working in this beautiful building, have an important mission: to serve the people of the Solomon Islands and to do our utmost to contribute to improving the standards of living for the poorest and most vulnerable in this country.”
“The co-location of the UN agencies in the JPO will allow for further integration and coordination of the UN’s work and help us work as one UN family in Solomon Islands.We are very proud of and grateful for this new office as we embark on this important and ambitious task of formulating a new five year programme for the United Nations.” She added.
“The launch of this office coincides with important landmark moments in the history our partnership: SDG, Samoa Pathway, Climate Change (GA happening now). This week, we’ll be holding consultations on 2018-2022 new UN Pacific Strategy. Last week, appraisal of the current UN Development Assistance Framework in the Solomon Islands, discussed lessons from our activities over past four years; what worked, where we should improve.”
Lubrani also noted that today’s celebration of the opening of this UN office also coincides with International Day of Peace. “The UN here in Solomon Islands has been with the people of Solomon Islands during the good as well as difficult times for the country. We will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to promote peace and prosperity for the people of Solomon Islands during the period of transition as the country prepares for the RAMSI drawdown in mid-2017.”
