Indonesia was represented at this week's 50th anniversary of independence in Nauru and the Antara news agency quotes Nauru President Baron Waqa had said that his country supports "every step taken by the government of Indonesia for the prosperity of the people of Papua and West Papua."
Mr Waqa met with Indonesia cabinet minister, Wiranto, and told him he was confident Jakarta is sincere in developing Papua and West Papua.
The news agency quotes Tuvalu Prime Minister, Enele Sopoaga, who had said 'We don`t want to interfere with the Indonesian policy. We highly value human rights as well as cultures, but Tuvalu is in no position to interfere in that issue.'
As part of the Indonesian government's contribution to the celebrations, it brought along a Papuan band called Papua Original.

2) Sri Mulyani Evaluates Papua`s Special Autonomy Funds
TEMPO.COJakarta - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati will evaluate the use of Papua`s special autonomy funds following the malnutrition and measles outbreak in Asmat, Papua. She will oversee if the funds' utilization is well managed.
“The recent occurrence of a nutritional crisis tells us on whether the special autonomy budget has been allocated with the formula about 2 percent of the general allocation fund," said Sri Mulyani at Hotel Borobudur, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, February 1.
In accordance with the Law No. 21/2001 on Special Autonomy for Papua Province, it is intended to finance the infrastructure development in Papua. “The fund is allocated for the equality purpose and to create prosperity for the Papua people,” she said.
According to Sri Mulyani, her ministry has the right to assess the fund disbursement since the funding period will be expired in 2021, besides the health crisis issues.
In line with Sri Mulyani, Acting Director General of Regional Development at the Home Affairs Ministry, Diah Indrajati will also evaluate the utilization of special autonomy fund.
The fund increases year by year from 2002 to 2018. This year, Papua received Rp22.45 trillion, and West Papua received Rp8.02 trillion of a total fund Rp61.67 trillion.
However, Diah regretted that with such a big-budget, a malnutrition issue still exists in District Agats, Asmat, Papua.

3) Govt Devises Plan for Papua Malnutrition, Measles Outbreak

TEMPO.COJakarta - Women Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Yohana Yembise revealed that one of the factors hampering the government`s attempt to help build the people of Papua is the local custom and religious figures.
“We feel that the government has a program but the ones who carry the people are local custom leaders and religious leaders,” said Yohana on Thursday, February 2.
Therefore, Minister Yohana is set to coordinate with the local regent, customary council, and religious leaders to give more attention to the victims of the measles outbreak in Papua.
“Most of the victims are women and children,” she explained.
According to her, health and malnutrition issues in Papua are related to the tradition, habit, and behavior of certain tribes. However, she reminded that it still needs a more thorough study to determine the exact cause.
She also highlighted Papua’s women’s education that is still lacking. This problem also contributes to children’s health in Papua. Yohana argues that local customs can sometimes victimize members of the public in general.
The malnutrition and measles outbreak in Asmat District of Papua have claimed several fatalities. As many as 71 children have died since September 2017 up to January 28, 2018.
Meanwhile, 646 Papuan children are infected with measles while 218 children are suffering from malnutrition.
